The Stories Behind the Headlines
This 1962 book has a Foreword by Ian Fleming ("James Bond is not in fact a hero, but an efficient and not very attractive blunt instrument in the hands of government ... a highly romanticized version of the true spy") who first met William Stephenson ("A Man Called Intrepid") when he was on a mission to Washington in 1941. Stephenson was sent to New York in 1940 to protect British shipping of war material (and to gather information on enemy activities for appropriate counter-measures), and to promote public opinion in favor of American intervention on the side of Britain. Any offensive actions would have to remain secret. This was part of Economic Warfare.

Chapter 2 documents the important political decisions made at the time by President Roosevelt and others in 1940. Fifty coal burning destroyers were sent to Britain at a critical time. The Sperry bomb-sight was leased after they learned the Germans had the plans. Chapter 3 tells of the propaganda campaign to discredit isolationists and Nazi supporters, and the methods used to cripple or harass German officials. Censorship of the mails was used to track down spies and saboteurs. Chapter 4 tells of the intrigues with the Vichy French government. The personal secretary of the Vichy ambassador was recruited into a business to gain knowledge of his affairs. This was used to discredit the Embassy. A British agent was placed in close contact with the Embassy to gain information from her male friends.

Chapter 5 tells of the Special Operations of economic warfare: to manufacture evidence of the facts believed to be true but which could not otherwise be proved! They had a laboratory to fabricate letters and other documents. The imprint of any typewrite on earth could be reproduced faultlessly. It tells how letters were created to condemn a Czech collaborator! Another game was to subject Fascist sympathizers to petty persecution to waste time in confusion, and get them into trouble. It tells how a forged letter was created to cause the cancellation of the Italian airline franchise, an important Axis channel of communication. Brazil then broke with the Axis. Chapter 6 tells of the OSS during WW2. Stephenson did everything to help Donovan get the position. The new organization faced two bureaucratic rivals: the FBI, and the military intelligence departments. It was mainly through the assistance of BSC that they survived. Intelligence and other trained experts were put at Donovan's disposal. It explains how a short-wave station in Boston was used to broadcast propaganda.

Chapter 7 repeats various anecdotes from the war. They used astrological predictions for propaganda! The techniques to use polling to control voting and win elections was written in 1943 by David Ogilvy. Since then the US Government has used these techniques both overtly and covertly. It tells how stories were given to principal journalists and feature writers, and how columnist Drew Pearson acquired information. Chapter 8 tells how President Roosevelt sent a message to Stephenson on November 27: "Japanese negotiations off. Services expect action within two weeks". How this happened is a matter of history. There is a discussion on the use and value of double agents. He tells of the training given to secret agents at Oshawa. Sabotage to French locomotives alone nearly equaled the number disabled by air action. The information from a Soviet code clerk in Canada exposed their spy system. The final tribute was that the BSC helped to reduce the number of American casualties.

Does this book show how a small group shapes and controls the events that affect our lives?

The Shape of the Past: A Christian Response to Secular Philosophies of History
Published in Paperback by Canadian Institute for Law, Theology & Public Policy, Inc. (June, 1975)
Author: John Warwick. Montgomery
Average review score:

Historiography from a Christian Perspective
This book is designed to introduce students of history to the science of historiography. It is divided into two parts. The first part is a survey of historiographical schools of thought. The second part consists of technical essays addressing particular theorists. The text commences with a useful discussion of the many nuances to the term "history", and includes a fascinating excursus into the question of time travel. Greco-Roman, early Christian, Renaissance and Reformation views of history are all outlined. Then the rise of modern historiography is described up to the mid 20th century. From this standpoint Montgomery then proceeds to examine contemporary Christian views of history and seeks to ground ultimate meaning in history in a transcendent perspective. Montgomery defends his case by arguing from the resurrection of Jesus to His deity as the foundation for building a transcendent view. In the remainder of the book Montgomery interacts with various other schools of thought including William James, Marxism, and so forth. The book, although now in need of some updating, serves as a very good survey of the subject, and goads the reader to consider "ultimate" questions when reflecting on historical processes. It is suitable for all students of history at a tertiary level, and would be of interest to historians who wish to understand how Christians approach the subject. All in all a very engaging book.

Smart Leadership (Smart Tapes Series)
Published in Audio Cassette by Learn (January, 2003)
Authors: Michael Podolinsky, Michael Podlinsky, and Robert L. Montgomery
Average review score:

Helpful Ideas and Practical Insights for Managers
"Smart Leadership" could have more appropriately been titled "Smart Management." It contains helpful ideas, practical insights, and proven principles for managers. The primary areas the tapes cover include empowering people effectively, running meetings efficiently, and delegating projects productively. In listening to the tapes I realized deficiencies in my own management skills and was given practical ways to improve. Unlike some audio books narrators, Michael Podolinsky does an outstanding job of keeping the material interesting and of keeping your mind engaged in what he's discussing. The program also comes complete with a handy pocket guide. If you're looking for stimulation and information to improve your management skills I recommend "Smart Leadership."

Swords into Plowshares: Nonviolent Direct Action for Nuclear Disarmament
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins (paper) (February, 1987)
Authors: Anne Montgomery and Arthur J. Laffin
Average review score:

Fools with hand tools
The first time I ever heard of Anne Montgomery, it was in the context of her jumping into, I think it was the Connecticut river, and beating on a nuclear submarine with a household hammer. I thought "Woah, what's that all about?." Eventually, I got to meet her. She was about seventy-five, weighed maybe 100lbs, five feet tall, dresed in a pink hooded sweatshirt and terrycloth sneakers, and just as sweet as you could imagine. That's sort of the jist of this whole book right there: things are not what they seem. Swords Into Ploughshares is a history of the Ploughshares movement- a nationwide faith-based affiliation of anti-nuclear and military industrial complex activists committed to non-violent direct action. Whew, that's a mouthful. What that means, very basically and slightly melodramatically explained by me is: a group of people that holds hands and prays together before sneaking into weapons facilities and disarming B-52's with cordless drills and such. Skillfully integrating elements of political analysis and theology the book left me with some inkling at its end of what was totally inconceivable to me at its beginning; namely, why this sweet little old lady would jump into an ice cold river and pound on a NUCLEAR SUBMARINE with a hand tool. (Other than the fact that she's insane of course, and I've talked to her, and she's not; a fact that makes the whole thing a bit harder to stomach, because if she's not crazy, and all the other people in the book aren't crazy, then there's some incredible motivation, passion, and dedication here that I have to deal with. Somehow. Cool. Yikes.)

Two Cities, Two Loves: Christian Responsibility in a Crumbling Culture
Published in Hardcover by Intervarsity Press (July, 1996)
Author: James Montgomery Boice
Average review score:

Intuitive, compelling, relevant and applicable
Dr. Boice's "Two Cities, Two Loves" intuitively hilights how Christians can influence the society in which they live by recognizing and lovingly addressing the candid realities of the society in which they live. Dr. Boice uncovers compelling evidence which reveals many shortcomings of the church at large and discusses relevant Scriptural truths which are necessary for every person who calls themselves "Christian" to embrace. He binds everything together with applicable exhortations to "pick up the torch" of genuine Christian living in a secular society. The point? To make America, town by town, a better place to live through living virtously, drawing people to inquire about the God we serve.

White Headed Eagle: John Mc Loughlin, Builder of an Empire
Published in Hardcover by Ayer Co Pub (June, 1940)
Author: Richard G. Montgomery
Average review score:

A Great Biography of John McLoughlin
In the introduction, Richard Montgomery states "...where facts were lacking or where reasonable doubts appeared, I was content to advance opinions frankly stated as such." I found this very true, and am not sure whether I like or dislike the many occasions where the author "filled in the blanks." Also in the introduction, the author wrote "...my principle aim was to collect, between the covers of a single volume, such information about the 'White-Headed Eagle' as has heretofore been accessible only to the more enterprising students of western history." True to this aim, Richard Montgomery delivers a wonderful account of one of the greatest heroic figures of the Northwest, Dr. John McLoughlin. This book is definitely worth your while.
